Generally speaking up until a few years ago, if it was made in North America, thread it in. If it was made in Japan or Europe, set it on top of threads. Kohler went to set on top with their command series engines back in the 1990's and others seem to be following suit. Look for the little info decal on the engine cowl right close to the top of the oil fill tube.
Or, as suggested, when changing the oil, precisely measure the correct amount of oil, add to crank case, run engine to circulate, let sit for 2 to 4 minutes then see which method gives you a full reading on the dip stick. All the best,
