Mtd snowblower won't move like it should

Postby rogalan » Sat Mar 08, 2014 11:54 am

I have a 1993 MTD snowblower Model # 313-660G000. I replaced the friction wheel rubber on the wheel axle as I have in the past, but when I engage the handle for the wheels they do not seem to turn properly like there not getting the power. I replaced the belt that runs the friction wheel, that spins off the engine pulley but it didn't help. I replaced what size it called for but the belt seems to be too big and the idler pulley is maxed out so there is tension on it. Should I go with a smaller belt? I'm assuming that the friction wheel off the engine runs continuously correct? Any reply is appreciated. Thanks

Is this a dual drive shaft machine? On my 1995 MTD the friction drive pulley goes 'backwards' because of the reverse rotation of the secondary drive shaft. You should have pull against (stretch) the spring to put the belt on the idler...or put another way, the belt should be on the same side as the spring.

3/8" x 31" Drive
3/8" x 35" Auger Drive

ok, so look from the front of the machine at the idler pulley for the drive. Look at which side the spring is on.

ie. there are only 4 variations total only 1 will work properly.

If the spring pulls to the left. Either the right side of thebelt loop on the left side of the pulley or the left side of the belt loop on the right side of the pulley. Both of these will provide tension, but only 1 is correct because the spring has to tighten the belt

I have to use the right side of the belt loop and pull it way over to the left side of the idler pulley (spring on the left - from front) of the machine. I've bruised my knuckles more than once. Mine has two drive shafts on the engine itself.
