Electric PTO

I have an older kohler K321 horizontal engine. It has an electric PTO on it. I haven't started the engine yet. I am trying to figure out if there should be a bolt holding the outer part of PTO on to the engine that threads into the middle of the crank shaft or if the three adjustment bolts are what hold it on the engine.

As of right now it does not have the center bolt but I assume that something should be there to keep everything in place when there is side tension on it from a belt.

Could you provide the spec number so I can look-up the crankshaft? The equipment numbers would be helpful if the engine is still with it. Personally I haven't seen a screwed-on electric pto clutch but that doesn't mean anything either.

May or may not need a bolt, but MOST manufacturers put one on anyway -Please read forum rules and guidelines, especially that part where we ask "Provide Engine and Equipment Model Numbers" We could look up the machines parts list and then advise correctly whether or not it originally was equipped with a bolt (and usually a large, very thick flat washer which is NOT common hardware you can get in a hardware store.)

@KE4 - that's an adjustable clutch - the coil winding is on a base bolted to the engine,followed by the keyed clutch plate. then the clutch disc ,ball bearing, drive pulley assembly go on , and retained by a cover that is then mounted to studs welded to the bolt-on plate with springs under neath and nylock or crown lock nuts (fine thread) retaining the adjustment plate - it presses down on the clutch disc to get disc within the .010 - .014 adjustment of the keyed clutch plate

Used to see them all the time on JD, Wheel Horse, old Simplicity, Case IH, and the like but clutches like that are few and far between these days as the newer ones do not require adjustment.

I was thinking it would be. To sure just how it was design requires the equipment numbers as I just can't keep everything in my head.

I get several JD's that have adjustable Ogura and Warner clutches each year. Here is a picture of one I just replaced due to a partial short; pulling 12amps. The F525 was having a starting problem after it was used for 1/2 hr or more.

They are adjusted to around .015"-.022" gap at the clutch disc later as they wear. Also the center bolt is tighten to 30-55 ft lbs.

I also burnish each of the new ones in after installation to remove any factory anti-rust coating that they might use while these awaiting sale and installation. There is also a soft start option available for users that engagement issues where the initial PTO engagement overloads the engine. I haven't installed any yet but I do a few candidates where it could prove useful. I just got to get the part number and pricing to see if the customers are willing to pay for it.
