GX31 Won't Idle, rich on low end

Postby nitrosport_5 » Thu Mar 27, 2014 10:25 pm

I've got a GX31 that had a plugged carb. Would run with choke but die when revved. Took carb apart, sprayed with carb cleaner and low air pressure, installed new carb kit and when it runs now, will run great at full throttle, but won't idle. Acts as if it is loading up with fuel. Any ideas as to what could be wrong? Thanks in advance!

need engine numbers - the model-serial and type codes engraved in engine block. too many different possible carb configurations to be of much help otherwise.

what carb is it? float? diaphragm? rotary valve? could be something small blew out when blowing out with air and was missed, could be something assembled wrong or something not installed, could be wrong float level, metering lever height, even something as simple as putting the gaskets on the wrong way which would plug up the air bleeds or vents.. or could be a bad plug, ignition or valve timing is off, valve clearances, plugged exhaust - a whole gamut of possible causes for your symptoms - so engine numbers would be extremely helpful to determine what exactly we're looking at.

Sorry, its a WYT 115 walbro carb.

Engine numbers
GcAG-1682294
Honda GX31

I checked the exploded view and everything appears to be assembled correctly.

What is the correct procedure for cleaning these carbs if air can possible damage them? Soaking in the carb cleaner bucket? Spray with carb cleaner spray and let dry? When I cleaned it I used very low pressure air.

Ultrasonic cleaner works best of all, spray carburetor cleaner can be used too but doesnt clean everything, carb cleaner in a bucket, AKA chem dip will ruin them - these small carburetors have lots of nylon, plastic, rubber, and fiber parts (check valves and the like) that are not replaceable, not available in any market.

Sounds to me, with that carb, you just may have a leaking check valve, could be a cracked body, or a mis-set metering lever (where did you set it to?) or maybe an overpressurized fuel tank (tank vent?) I'd pressure test the carb first - and if that isnt the issue, pressure / vacuum test the fuel tank or at least the vent

We will need the other set of letters and number (Type code) that is there too. My vendors has following types listed: SA, SA2, SA5, SAT, SAT5, SCMS, STW2, TA2, TAP within that serial number range.

And Walbro lists only the following series in WY family on their website: WY, WYB, WYF, WYJ, WYK, WYL, WYM, WYP, WZ . Please check your carburetor numbers.
The WYT-115 appears to be wrong.

It looks like you have a WYL-115 instead of a WYT-115. I had several of these lately where the needle seat was leaking at idle and while the units were stored with pressure on the fuel tank would over time. I had to replace several carburetors because of this leaking. But I would check the metering lever height (as BGS mentions) and setting it to correct height, those in the kits are seldom set right as the kits travel a lot.
