timing nova II on a tecumseh hs50

Postby 38racing » Wed Apr 09, 2014 5:46 pm

I have an 76 HS50 on an Ariens blower not running when I got it from PO. I am pretty sure I have narrowed it down to weak/inconsistent spark. A Nova II is not much more $ than a point /condenser set. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with the timing. With the points you have to rotate the coil assembly so points open at .035 BTDC. It's a pita that I have done repeatedly and still no start. (just one short firing once). The timing spec for an H50 is .080 BTDC. That's why I wonder how the Nova gets the timing right because installing it on either engine is the same, just splicing into the primary circuit.

Leave the points in and use them to set timing of the stator - the Nova gets its timing signal on the collapse or rise of the magnetic field in the coil (voltage spikes) so the coil which rides on the adjustable stator needs to be timed correctly to the crank position by way of using the points to determine where they begin to open, when gap is set at .020" - that opening should occur at the peak voltage the coil generates - shortly after that the voltage declines quickly due to the magnet position (the field collapses) which triggers the module to "switch open" like the points would, inducing the voltage in coil secondary. The module wont fix a weak coil or magnets which you may more likely have, if new points can generate a consistent spark, the module can work in their stead, but if new points and condenser cannot solve the problem, neither will the nova module.

Thanks. If the nova does not replace timing then maybe i will try new points kit. although in theory doing the timing with nova should be the last time. and if i have it right now then i could just splice in the nova .
