Tecumseh HM100 Crank question

Postby creia » Sat Apr 12, 2014 10:03 pm

HM100- 159252L B3316D
We have this engine and my son is going to attempt to get it running. It is currently completely disassembled, but appears to be all there. Unfortunately, it has the "tapered" crank PTO end (for use on a generator possibly?) that will not suit our needs should we decide to use it. I am hoping that someone can let me know if a "straight" crank can be swapped for the "tapered" crank, and more specifically, what the Tecumseh part # would be for that "straight" crank would be? Also, if available, would that straight crank end be 3/4" or 1"?
The tapered crank part # for OUR engine is 35441A ( from Parts Tree).
Thanks for any help guys,
Michael

Pretty much any HM100 crank will go in - They were once available in many sizes, but pretty much down to what may be available now any more - might be a 7/8, 1", 3/4" or even 5/8" (highly unlikely!) and of course, crank length - whether it is drilled and tapped (and what size) and what sort of keyway (straight slot, half moon, etc.) as well as tapered and geared - if it were me, I'd do a google search on HM100 tecumseh engines, try and find something that seems to fit an application that you may be looking at (I.E. Snowblower, where they might be most common) - Rototiller, Go-Kart, or the like - and see if you can find a reference to the model-spec numbers, use those numbers to look up your crank. - Pretty much any HM100 crank is gonna fit the block (Though you need to be watchful to the side cover if it be ball bearing or DU Bearing, etc.)
How poor are they who have not patience. What wound did ever heal, but by degrees? - Iago (Othello Act II, Scene 3)

Brian,
Thank you for the information. :) The fact that Tecumseh made so MANY versions of their cranks is what confused me (does not take much  ) as to which ones would fit our application. I had also read "somewhere" that the cranks on Tecumseh's (for the same model) were different on the FLYWHEEL END (different length and taper) depending if the engine has a points/condensor or electronic ignition (ours is electronic). Has anybody else heard of this? Our engine is NOT a ball bearing supported crank, and we would need a 3/4" straight crank end, minimum of 2.25" in length, that has the "typical" slotted keyway the entire length. Of course, drilled and tapped for a crank bolt would be welcomed as well, but w/o it would not be a deal breaker. I'll start looking around on EBay for a good used one.
