Echo trimmer won't rev

Postby BLES » Mon Jun 30, 2014 4:43 pm

Echo SRM-280U #82513006070

New fuel, flushed tank, lines, new filter. Carb kit and carb cleaned in ultrasonic cleaner. Muffler screen clear.

Starts real well and idles nice but won't rev up. Just labors as if gearbox was seized. Removed engine to verify no mechanical drag.

What next?? Thanks in advance.

A couple things to check.

First verify that the throttle vane in opening all the way. There is usually a small roller in these that can be easily lose. If it is missing the throttle vane will not open fully.

Try adjusting the hi speed mixture. These carburetor have a plug over the mixture screw. This mixture screw should have been removed during cleaning to allow passages to cleaned by the ultrasonics easier.

You could also still have a restricted muffler. You may need to remove fully to test this.

Carburetor IPL.

Most Echo units, actually, most all handheld 2 strokes nowadays, have a catalyst honeycomb in the muffler ( which is why the muff. is so heavy). Anyways, seems cat. equipped units will rarely clog the muffler, or the screen, but DO tend to clog the cylinder exhaust port. Pull the muffler and check/clean the port.
Ya also wanna check the condition of the cylinder and rings while ya got the muff. off. It's one of the FIRST things I do when I lay my paws onna handheld.

In addition, you could very well have carb issues also. Ya didn't mention the plug...pull it and check/clean.

Here's my embarrassing update:

I checked the muff/cat/screen but not the actual port. You guessed it right.... almost plugged completely off. Cleaned carbon from port and it runs like a champ. Don't know why I didn't check it when I first had it off.

Thanks again for the help.

Glad our members were of some help. Maybe you can help us with some of our problems too from time to time. The only thing I ask is that posters to keep in mind we have members are of all experience levels and to respectful. Novices may ask questions that seems like you should know that questions but they wouldn't be asking if they did. We will also ask "did you check this questions" about things we automatically check as we sometimes don't the poster experience level either.

Even the pros miss things sometimes or get distracted while doing the checks. Embarrassment is just part of the learning process sometimes, just helps to reenforce your memory sorta like buying and replacing parts just to find out you left the kill switch on. Been there and done that myself.

When I first started working on 2Cs it took me a very long time to get them to work. Now with a few minutes I can usually tell you at where the problem lays. There will always be something new or old that will give us problems.

That's what I get paid these big bucks for!!!!

A couple of things can contribute to port clogging also:
1. Frequently running the unit at less than wide open. (Most everybody does.)
2. Too long trimmer lines, which slows the unit down, see # 1.
3. Too rich on the oil/ gas mix. With today's oils, no need to skimp on the gas, or add that extra splash of oil " to be on the safe side".
