Briggs 16hp help

Postby dart451 » Fri Jul 18, 2014 7:22 pm

Hello all,

I am working on a Briggs, 3264437-0758-01, ser#87060414. Doesn't want to start and the first thing I was looking for was the Points cover! Can't find one! I looked this part number up and it appears that it might have a Kit-MAGNETRON Ignition. Do these usually go out or need adjustment? Not even sure where it is! The engine does seem to sputter but won't even start momentarily with starter fluid...

Welcome to the forum dart451

Easy stuff first.
Pull plug and lay it on block and crank and look for spark.
If no spark, try a known/ new spark plug..
Some of the big boys will be along in a little (They get lazy on the weekend) :D
and they will be able to help

okie :usa:

On august 1, 1981, the cast iron engines were equipped with the magnetron ignition. Earlier cast iron engines can not be converted to magnetron unless the polarity in the flywheel magnets is changed. Your engine was manufactured on Jun 4, 1987. This information is from the 1981 briggs update.

Use a Briggs spark tester to test the strength of your ignition system. If you do not see a spark, examine the shut off wire that is used to ground the ignition. Also clean the area where the ignition system is attached to the engine. Verify the flywheel key is not sheared. The moveable armature bracket should be timed so the attachment bolts are centered in the slots. 398811 is the part number for a replacement magnetron ignition if needed.

Number correction 326437-0758-01

There is quite a few things that can cause engines not to run. You will need go through the basic troubleshooting steps to eliminated possible causes.

Without knowing it history and based on what has been posted I would check that is firing and the flywheel key isn't sheared then the valve clearance and compression. A valve problem or cylinder wear can cause the compression be so low that it will sputter but not run.

I had a mid 80's Briggs horizontal 7hp a couple years ago that only after putting large amount fuel into the cylinder that normally creates a flooded condition would only slowly run a short time. The valve clearances were down to zero. Even after I lapped and adjusted the valves it only had 30 lbs of compression with a new head gasket. I ended up rebuilding the engine.

Thank you for all the replies! Appreciate the help! Unfortunately I have been so busy that I haven't gotten a chance to trouble-shoot this engine at all yet! But today is the day! This engine is on an Arc welder setup, electric start. I was primarily looking for problem being the points but seeing as the engine doesn't have points, I shall not look there! LOL As for the flywheel key being sheared, I would kinda doubt it in this type of setup but...who knows...should be a blast getting the flywheel off!

Before you do anything drastic...check that spark. Then make sure that the single small wire coming off the magneto isn't grounding against something...unplug it altogether if you can. You have to pull the sparkplug wire to kill it....
