MTD 526 Tiller Reverse??

Postby Pete in Milton » Wed Jul 30, 2014 9:41 am

My Brother-in-law picked up this tiller model # 216-385-500 ? Serial #747969? It has a Tecumseh OHH50 motor serial # 68002000 another # is 4044R
The reason for the question marks is I'm not sure that they represent the model and serial #'s those are the numbers on the machine.
The carb seems to have no mixture adjustments and surges like crazy, give it a pump of the primer and it smooth's right out. My conclusion is the main mixture orifice is partially plugged and it needs a good ultrasonic bath!!!
Nest question the tiller has a reverse position? on the drive lever, there is an additional pulley on the transmission and an idler on the motor BUT I suspect some components are missing. He's been searching for a parts diagram without success, any ideas where to look for this? He is a tinkerer and wants to get it back to being complete.
Thanks for any and all help you may be able to provide.
Best Regards
Pete

if it is the one I am thinking of (mental picture) the idler sits on a moving arm that is *above* the level of the motor drive pulley, correct? That idler holds the reverse belt which runs on the transmission pulley ,and the arm moves the idler so that the belt is being pressed against the engine pulley, accomplishing reverse function by driving the "wrong" side of the belt eliminating the need for an Auxiliary PTO shaft. Probably have to locate an old paper parts manual, sounds like 1984 - 1985 model, which likely is not in any online parts catalogs , unless you find a PDF version of the paper manual.

I have a manual for a 219-385a mtd form is 770-8291. It shows separate forward and reverse belts. Shows a briggs engine and looks like only the crank drive. I might even have that tiller or I downloaded manual because a friend has one.

Thank you bsengine and Deer2me, bsengine your memory is impeccable! you nailed that one right on as confirmed but the link Deer2me sent for the manual, which we downloaded. and it is missing a part, the engine pulley has been replaced by a single sheave pulley so that will have to be replaced to get reverse.
You guys are just an awesome resource!
Thank you very much!!!

May not be a missing pulley, if there's a wide flat area on it that lines up with the belt path on the reverse pulleys. as I recollect, the engine sheave has no second groove for the belt, since the belt is being run on its flat side - they just lay up against engine pulley, or against the crankshaft itself , depending on how things line up.

Belt never touches engine pulley at all, until reverse gets engaged.

HI bsengine,
I'm not sure as there is a keyway on the crankshaft which may play hell with the belt. I'll check for any witness marks but I doubt that I'll see any I don't think reverse is a frequently used feature since you have to strong arm the lever into position and hold it there!
Thanks again!
