B&S Inteck twin OHV?

Postby Buckshot 1 » Mon Aug 25, 2014 6:16 am

:) Engine numbers:407777-0121-E5, SN; 00524YH. This LT is in my shop for engine run off, bad governor. Pulled the sump and the gov'r gear (steel) came out in pieces. My question is, the shaft/rod that the gov'r gear rides on is broke off in the block. Is this shaft pressed in? If so how do I get the remaining piece out off the block? I checked the IPL for this engine and did not see the shaft/rod listed, but the service manual tells you to replace if damaged/scared. Any ideas/suggestions will be greatly appreicated. Thank you for your time. :usa:

To the best of my knowledge, this is not a replacement part, it is pressed in which sometimes comes out and will not stay in place once removed. IF it were mine, I would be looking for a different block.

I guess you could try to locate the precise position from the outside and drill thru from the outside and drive it out but don't know what you would replace it with unless you are a machinest or know a really good one. The outside hole could be plugged with JB Weld. IF by chance you get it out and find a suitable shaft, I would suggest drilling hole thru the side of the casting inside the engine into the shaft hole using an angle drill, tap the hole, file a flat on the shaft where the set screw would hit and use Loc-tite on set screw or both.

:) Walt & Bgs, Thank you for your replies. I kinda fiqured it was going to be a shortblock/new engine. As I am not going to go thru the hassle of trying remove the shaft/rod from the block. Either one of you have any ideas of what may have caused this shaft/rod to break? :usa:

Piece of governor gear wedged between cam and gov. gear, shearing the shaft off .. Also observe whether you have any bent pushrod or pieces in the crankcase - they have been known to have pushrods bend or come loose and fall into crankcase, tangling with cam and gov gear.. I have seen TWO that did that here. Both got new engines.

:) I would say that your are right on gov'r, as when I pulled the sump, one of the wings on along with the pin on the the gov'r gear had broke off. As of getting a new engine because of the push rods, no way. This engine is 14yr's old. The idea of getting a new engine is gone. I did find a used block and after talking to my customer it was decided to get the used block and build it. :usa:

:) Update. Customer now has decided to buy a new engine and get the used block. That way I can install the new engine to get him going and then build the old one using the used block. Then sell it to try and recover some funds. :usa:
