Tecumseh sump cover on a hh70-can't remove

Postby bjasa » Wed Dec 24, 2014 7:14 pm

I'm having trouble removing sump cover on a hh70 off a Ariens tiller. All pulleys, keys, stator, and cover bolts are removed. Cover comes out just past dowel pins and stops. This motor has two shafts. Is there a snap ring behind an oil seal ? thanks in advance. Bob Jasa

Missing the spec number need to look at the specific engine.

Did you buff down the two shafts? The build=up on these can make to where you can't remove the covers if the bearing surfaces hasn't worn much.

It is a hh70 140027b Serial # is 4225R. Yes I did emery cloth shafts, I will recheck shafts. Thanks for any help. This motor came off a Ariens Rocket rear tine tiller. I want to put in new rings.

Looked-up the camshaft image; No retaining clips and I know crankshafts don't normally have retaining clips either. Here is an image of the camshaft.

HH series may have a ball bearing on the crank which is a very close fit to the crank - may have to pop out the oil seal and clean off carbonoized oil and rust between seal and bearing - Some of them have bearing retainers you can pop the 2 nuts off the small studs on the outside and let the bearing stay on the crank, as well, although you then have to re-assemble and seal up everything once you get it apart.

It appears to be hanging up on the crankshaft-looks like I will remove bearing retaining nuts on the outside and seal too. Going to eat Christmas dinner. Thanks to everyone and have a Merry Christmas Bob

Try alternately (lightly) tapping the shaft ends with the cover under slight outward pressure using a flat pry bar. This will often ease the cover off. MH

I took the 2 retaining nuts off and was able to get the cover off. I will be able to work around it. Thanks again for all your help. Bob
