Yes I did use the automobile type gauge I figure it wasn't the best but did really want to go the big shop to get the other. But It did after 3 or 4 go to zero. Also I tried running without the muffler and it would hit but not start and also I didn't really have the tools here to look at the flywheel couldn't get the bell spacer adaptor off without my star tools. Couldn't really tell about the key but it is kinda sticky when pulling rope kinda hard but then again sometimes not. What I could see of the cylinder walls is good and rings are free going to look thur the scope to take a better look. Not going to throw much time at it just wanted him to know what is wrong going thur the steps just to make sure that it is nwtrb!!!! Thanks for all the input. If I wasn't slow I prob wouldn't fooled with it this long but the same he deserves to have a good honest answer. Thanks again

Slow times at the shop here too; makes good time to learn new things. I just learned how to find what model a Stihl product is when all the decals are gone missing.

Your going to need a way to stop piston anyway as you got to remove the clutch too just to get the starter housing off. You need to do this even to just replace a bad starter rope. Boy MTD is proud that clutch removal tool and there is two versions. I usually end up using a pair soft of jawed pliers to remove these.

This does make a case for extra set of tools that is if the wife doesn't find out.

Brian you are correct, 2004 and earlier Ryobi were MTD, 2005 and up Homelite who quit supplying internal service parts a few years ago. Not cost effective to repair most products, just replace components. I am glad I left the retail service side, getting too old and cranky to deal with a lot of the stuff you guys see every day.

Just me know what you need via a PM or email and if I got it send it via return email. Just can't send everything at one time since email has max attached file size limits.
