Poulan "Wild Thing" Purge Bulb Issue

Postby puttinalong » Mon Jan 12, 2015 5:24 pm

Replaced the lines on a Poulan "Wild Thing" chainsaw. I have checked and rechecked the routing but the purge bulb won't fill back up after three pumps and is stuck depressed. Take the line off of the carb and it re-inflates. I was able to start the saw for about four seconds until it shut off. The routing that I have is small line with filter on end to the fuel pump inlet/ the other inlet on the carb goes to shorter nipple on purge bulb/ fuel line from longer nipple to tank. I have scratched the hair off the top of my head trying to figure out what I am doing wrong...Thanks for any help. The chainsaw is a Poulan "Wild Thing" model #2375...it has the Walbro carb on it.

Few possibles:
  • Clogged fuel filter.
  • Clogged fuel screen in the carburetor.
  • Fuel lines at carburetor connected backwards. I know how can it be backwards. When I first started repairing these I just about pull all hair out too.

  • Easy to check for fuel filter clog by simply disconnecting the line at the carburetor and try priming.
  • The carburetor filter screen is on the fuel pump side opposite of the metering diaphragm. They clog easily when the fuel filter not on the fuel supply line and some may look clean but still can be clogged.
  • Backward lines can tested for by simply reversing them.

Thank you for the help. I have tried reversing the lines and when it was primed it was chucking fuel into the venturi. I will take the carburetor apart and take the screen out of it to get it clean. I will post back with my results. I would pull my hair out with this, but it's too short and receding faster everyday.

I appreciate your time responding, I know time is valuable and don't take it for granted.

Thank you again, just finished up the saw. The culprit was a SEVERELY blocked filter screen inside the carburetor to the point it had backed up to the surrounding orifices leading to the screen. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!

Yes it does have some sharp folks here, and courteous as well. One thing I can't stand is when someone posts a question and doesn't have the common decency to report back with their findings. If someone is going to take the time to help me on a question, the very LEAST I can do is to report back my findings. This is one of, if not the best forum on small engines.

After the suggestion was posted, the clogged filter screen stuck out to me like a sore thumb and I should have been able to figure that out, but I have been away from small engine repair as my hobby for some time due to our toddler son and time restrictions. It feels good to be getting back into the shop, commonly I fix friends' machines for bartering their skills...saves everyone a load of money. :D
