Doesn't seem a bit out the normal to me it one manufacture's of making sure the rod caps are install correctly. Now those cap screws are a little out of place to me as they are setup to take wiring to prevent loosing. I usually just see a section metal strap bent over against the head of the screw to prevent loosing.

As for long they been using these system I have not a clue.

Never seen it before. Doesn't the split for the cap seem to be rotated much more toward the rod body than usual? Made in China?

Thanks AVB and HondaG100 for your response

This was not a trick question.
I guess this rod/cap are not too common-place judging from the lack of response.

I just ran across this picture. I shall assume this is rather new, even for Bobodo :D

Yeah - looks fairly common to the chinese honda clones - Honda, Tecumseh, Briggs, Kohler also have had caps like that (sawtooth), and Ive seen the split actually that close to the rod beam on lots of engines. - It isn't that unusual, but I would suspect the main reason for lack of responses on it is simply that there just isn't much real rebuilding going on any more - the Pros usually don't bother (short block or re-power) while the not-so-pro also rarely go that deep (and many don't notice) but Ive seen that type of match-up since the late 90's on many engines as well. Just seems more common on the Honda Clone chinese engines from what I have seen. Now if we had a bunch of engine builders (racers, karting, etc - but there's other forums for that) you'd probably see a lot more feedback :)

Due to current pricing structure of equipment and parts Brian is right as no one seems to have anything rebuilt anymore either due costs or the lack of available parts.

The last time I priced out rebuilding a 1992 Dodge 3.9 liter I couldn't even find a local machine shop that could bore and hone the cylinder to the oversize. The closest shop was over 100 away and with its cost and the parts I could have got rebuilt short block from Advance for less. The only problem there was I would not been to do the engine mods that I had planned to do.

To me major engine repairs are going away much the same way as the electronics repairs did years ago as repairs costs out stripped the replacement costs. It a shame as a lot of the older equipment is much better built IMHO.

Rebuild engines is about all I do any more and I do not recall ever seeing that type rod cap and wire tie on a B&S engine which is about all I work on now. I have an old one and a newer one down in the shop right now.

Automotive applications have been using "cracked rods" for 20 years or more! the big end is bored and honed as one piece , then the inside is scored along where they want the parting line. they insert an expanding mandrel and "POP" the rod cracks along the surface and it ensures a perfect match up every time!
