There's two different styles of the Briggs & Stratton 19069 flywheel puller. Which type you guys prefer?

Actually they are all the same - the difference is - one style is OEM Briggs (in the shape of the Briggs logo) - the others are made in taiwan aftermarket "double duty" (notice there's 4 outer holes instead of 2 - they do duty as two different sizes, where with the Briggs pullers, they are sold separately)

- there's actually 4-5 different briggs flywheel pullers, and one of them costs over $125.00 dealer cost. (just got one this spring)

But the aftermarket ones, there's just that one style that covers 2 Briggs part numbers - one's for the smaller size flywheels, commonly the ones used on lawnmowers the other for the heavier size 8 HP engines But when it comes to OE Briggs, there's the pullers for the bigger Intek and Vanguard engines, special new pullers for the new DOV's and pullers for the Micro Engines..

We are actually one of the vendors in that list on ebay selling the Oregon version of the made-in-taiwan puller - most of the briggs OE ones look to be "New Old Stock" - they're pretty durn cheap - which is why I don't list them on our ebay store - cant compete and remain profitable at those prices. Actually looks like a whole bunch of them are selling Stens versions and just drop-shipping them using Stens stock photos.. which works.. until they start getting backordered at Stens.

Oh yeah - as to which I prefer - have used BOTH (among others) and nothing, but nothing beats the OEM Fit and Quality.

Yeah, those made from a piece of plate see will bend.

I use a steering wheel puller most of the time. Has other uses. An example:

I also use the steering wheel type puller; to me it is a harmonic balancer puller. There is both cheap and good versions of these too. The puller is more universal than Briggs style as it provides both two and three point pulling for various flywheels. These pullers usually comes with an assortment of pulling bolts but they are not the self tapping versions nor are they long enough in some cases. There will flywheels that will need tapping of the pulling holes as the manufacture don't always tap them prior to installing the flywheel. They do this to cut down on manufacturing costs.

I usually apply good tension on the bolts and give a good smack to the center bolt using a brass hammer; just got to either leave the retaining nut on the crankshaft or be prepare to catch the flywheel as it jars loose. Now when pulling a flywheel uses retaining bolts which you definite got to be ready to catch that flywheel as jars loose.

Basically you got to use common sense when using which ever puller you use.

By the way on that flywheel, if you don't have a puller, you can give it a good smack with a block of wood and a hammer. What you do is give it a smack from the side of the flywheel; the side where the magnets are, and it should pop loose from the crankshaft.'

I have both sizes of the briggs pullers, along with a slew of other kinds, all nice units... but more often than not I find myself using the ol' prybar and hammer trick!

I recently picked up a Craftsman push mower off craigslist. My usual flywheel removal procedures have had no affect on this mower. With all my older mowers and edgers, the flywheels come off real easy. Maybe it has something to do with vertical shaft engines that get their flywheels seized on there so tight; I don't know.

When I put flywheels back on I apply blue line chalk the crank helps not to be so hard to get them off!!!!

Chalk sure isn't a good idea since it is the FRICTION that holds them on !!
