Welch plug sealer

Postby cadman60 » Mon Mar 03, 2014 6:04 pm

I'm rebuilding a carb and installed 2 new welch plugs. I've heard to seal the outer edge with nail polish, but with today's gas and additives, I'm wondering if this will still work? If nail polish won't work what is the best product that will?

Used it all my life on plugs. Used to borrow it from Carl....who didn't use it on plugs.

Yes, we still use clear nail polish and it works fine.

Only got pink with sparkly bits but mainly use a UK product - Wellseal- that's been around for at least 50 years and I reckon it would take more than a bit of ethanol to shift it. Takes ages to get it off the nails!!
Seriously though is there not a version of your Permatex, that we read about in Briggs manuals etc , that is suitable?

All of my Briggs manuals, and even the Tecumseh manuals for that matter, specifically state to use "nail polish" to seal the edges of the welch plugs.

In the shop I last worked for we all used nail polish. We also used our own but different color so if a carb related come-back came in we new immediately who done it.
We got another George xxxx-up here!

I'm sure your right but just grabbed a manual at random and , quote "Use a sealant such as Permatex #2". So each to his (or her) own.

Fact of the matter is a properly seated plug needs no sealant. It's really just an insurance thing.
