Chrome Rings For Briggs

Postby Mek-a-nik » Thu Mar 13, 2014 6:29 am

Working on a real oil burner. 126402-0206-E1-030108FD It fouls the plug in just a few minutes. Compression is 65#, warm. Leakdown showed a leaky exhaust valve, which was because of carbon, no problem there.
The manual says bore it if it's more than .005" oversize. This is about .008". (aluminum bore) I think the real problem is the ring gaps.
Top- .082"
Middle- .045"
Oil- .110"
Spec for compression rings is .035" max, oil ring .045" max.
I didn't measure the side clearance yet. Not sure, I think I need a new ring to measure that? I hope it's not too bad, the piston is NLA.
I generally don't get into this kind of work, but I'm helping someone out. Plus, I like learning stuff that I can use as experience.
I'm thinking that the .008" bore isn't too bad. I'd like to try chrome rings that I've read about on here. The IPL's that I've seen don't list a chrome ring. Is (was) there such a thing? Anyone know the part number or can send me in the right direction to find it?
I may be putting a bandaid on a gunshot wound, but I'd like to give this engine a little more life.

Briggs shows the .020" oversize piston is still available for that engine if that becomes a necessity. It is not cheap, around $60, but may be worth it to the engine owner.

See others done posted but this additional info may be of help.

Hope you mean hone it using a ridged hone; although, you may have access to boring equipment and a good hone.

Std is available. The 690021 has been superseded to 799063.

.020 Over is available. The 694168 has been superseded to 791326 and 795430 both which is now superseded 799064.

This ol' heap is not getting bored, for sure! I guess there are no chrome rings available, judging by the responses.

I do not believe that chrome ring sets were EVER made for that engine. Besides that, the numbers you provided suggest that the cylinder wall is likely worn past "reject" even for chrome rings, so it is a moot point. While re-boring and over-sizing the piston and rings would be an option, it is certainly not cost effective, as you already know, unless this engine was somehow very "special" or had "sentimental value"to the owner.
As an aside, we have used chrome ring sets with good success on the older 3 HP and 5HP "flathead" horizontal-shaft Briggs from the 1970's and 1980's, as the chrome ring set for these are still available NOS.

If that is what you gotta do, I would suggest finding an oversize aftermarket ring set for that model and then file down the ends to obtain ring end gap clearance, which might do what you intend - would not be worth wasting time on anything else, if it isn't worth boring, it likely isn't worth the hassle and fuss of chrome ring sets, if any size can be had.

We have done what Brian has suggested on a couple of engines, with some "limited" success, providing of course that your bore is not all scored.

Thanks, Micheal and Brian. I ordered .020 over rings. I was thinking of trying that if I couldn't get chrome. The bore is smooth, I guess being aluminum I shouldn't hone it?
