288707 flathead with walbro lmt carb on an old craftsman that I pulled out of storage. My recollection is that it was running when stored. So carb was totally sludged. I replaced it with one that had been on an engine that I had bench tested. Engine was used for a repower but it got the pump carb of the original. So it starts and runs but develops a puff like miss. I discovered that if I close the shutoff it smooths out in about 5 seconds. Reopening it miss comes back in 10 seconds. Very repeatable. I figured it was flooding. I decided to clean a different carb which I bench test and no flooding. Installed it and exact same performance. I bench tested first carb and it wasn't flooding. Jus for heck I installed it again. Same exact performance. Something I noticed once was thst it ran fine until I finished installing air cleaner assembly. Then missing started. Subsequent testing it would miss even with assembly off. Only other thought is that muffler heat is affecting gas in bowl. There's no heat shield as I've seen on some setups. Anything else I should look at?
One other observation. Even using a tach adjusting low speed mixture seems to have no effect.
