Postby G Archer » Mon Apr 28, 2014 7:19 pm

Hi folks,I just rebuild a Kohler Command 27 HP CH 740.I installed piston rings and lapped the valves.Ran fine for about an hour, now it will crank and idle fine but at WOT it will not rev up like its supposed to.It seems like it has a timing problem, like mabe a sheared flywheel key.It all started sudde nley.Compression is 130 psi per cylinder. Thanks for any help..

Hi Glenn

It does sound like a timing problem. What torque did you use to replace flywheel after your ring job?

Hi folks, looking at a repair manual could it be a bad ground causing the smart spark advance not to work? Just a thought.

Glenn

Enter your model number exactly as shown on your engine identification decal, including the spaces and dashes. Only enter the letters before the number, not after the number.

This will help us to help you. :D

I know it is easy that way but after a few sheared keys or busted flywheels you will learn to use a torque wrench to get it right the first time. Personally, I hate having to lick my calf over again because I was too big of a hurry.

It ain't the flywheel key! Could be the module ground, go over all the connections, could be the carb, could be the governor acting up.

It would nice to know the spec number as there is only 181 versions of the CH740 to see which ignition system it has.

Numbers would be nice,( you know that's one of my pet peeves), BUT the OP said it has the Smart Spark system, did he not? There's only three systems, and only one is called "smart spark" and uses an external module.
However, all of the electrics depend on a good, solid GROUND,no?

Unless of course, the OP just heard of the smart spark system associated with Kohler Command but has no idea if it is equipped with it or not (Would not be the first time). ... so one could end up chasing a red herring.
