Monkey Wards Generator

Postby Gary Greathouse » Wed Jul 30, 2014 7:02 pm

I just bought a model MX 27121c Montgomery wards generator at a yard sale for $25. It had no compression, so I removed the head and the valves were stuck open. Soaked them with oil and the piston also over night. Cleaned the carb and fuel tank, while the oil soaked in, also cleaned the pickups and magneto. put it all back together the next day and it started right up, It surges a lot under a load but may be in the carb or gaskets. I had 2 extra briggs head gaskets so that is new.
Any suggestions fellas? And also The plaque the info is on is all wore off but for the model and serial# Any idea what watt and year it is? It's a 4 horse briggs.

MX-27121C 1750 watts 120 vac 4 hp Briggs 100212-0583-01

The engine date code should give age in a fairly narrow range.

Where might I find the code? Is it the one next to the carb stamped into the pull rope case?

It is on the blower housing which I think your calling the pull rope case. It should have both engine model type numbers along with the date code. The first two digits is the year, the next two is the month followed by the day of the month. Example 730630EA which is 1973 June 30. If it close to end of the year it a judgement call if it is that year or next one that gen was assembled.

the code is 80 12 05, Sory it took so long to get back has been a BZ week lol. Well I got it running great the only prob is the gov. It only works part of the time under a load, I noticed the spring looks a little stretched could that be the prob? I already adjusted the static and changed the spring around to diff holes with no luck lol. Any ideas? When first put under a load it stays at idle for about 30 seconds then to about 1/4 throttle for 5 sec. and back to idle and repeat.

Also I reworked the exhaust, The 4" 2.5" diameter muffler was almost touching the carb. at the diaphragm case so I put in a 3/4 st.ell and 4 inch nipple to turn it out the side and keep from melting the dia. which is already showing some heat distortion. could that cause my problems?

Sounds like what we call a surge. You need a tachometer, or considering it is a generator, a hertz meter

when nothing plugged in on it, should be around 3750 RPM, or about 62 Hz at 120v output, unless an auto idle is present. when under a load, should be around 3600 RPM or 60Hz output (assuming this is a North America application - U.K. needs 50Hz, so RPMS would be slower)

Once you got that set, if it is still doing as you describe (surging) that is usually indicative of a fuel starvation issue. If you get the RPM set right after a static governor adjustment, should not be a governor issue. - way to tell is to put a finger on the throttle lever and hold it in place to keep it from moving, and see if the engine starts to die out or sputter or not run smoothly - if it does the problem is not the governor, but if it runs fine when holding throttle steady, you have some sort of governor issue - changing the location of the hole the spring hooks in the governor arm is just changing the sensitivity (Governor droop)

Thanks guys. I checked and checked everything all over again. could find no probs with fuel delivery, however upon replacement of the fuel tank the. what im going to call the "speed adjustment lever" the 1 the screw adjuster goes to and the spring from the gov, lol. Just FELL OFF!!!, the rivet has been wore out and was moving around about 1/4 inch up and down without moving the throttle. It has been doing it for some time as the hole where it mounts is 2x taller than wide lol.
not sure how I missed that but looks like I need a new tank. Im going to try and rig it first and make sure that was it before I put to much money into it. Will let ya know soon what happens.
