Key will not stay put

Postby JandL » Sat Aug 30, 2014 10:39 am

Greetings,

I have a Honda GCV190 on a Simpson pressure washer that came in last week for the engine lower oil seal torn up. I replaced the seal and reinstalled the pressure pump and test ran it. Inspecting for leaks with the engine at idle I noticed the key working its way up the key channel in the key way to the crank! A few seconds more and it would have torn up the new oil seal! Removed pump, I took a punch and put a few dents in the key, reinstalled the key and had to use a light hammer to tap in into position. Reinstalled pump with SAME result! I'm looking for ideas...Thanks to all.

Stake/dent the crank KEYWAY to stop it from walking out, not the key!
You could also stake the keyway at the pump bore, but you would have to then insert the key in the bore behind the staking and mke sure it stays in place with a dab of heavy grease, pia.

EDIT: Something ain't right! I haven't worked on a lot of P.W.s pump-wise, but I've never ran into that problem before! Sounds like the KEY is way too short! Just get a longer key.
Could also be the crank isn't entering the pump bore deep enough.
If yer dealing with a flex coupling setup,( not likely, right) then ya gotta tighten the set screw!

The crankshaft key-way shouldn't being allowing the key to enter the seal area as it normally stops well short of it. Are you sure the unit has the correct pump on it? Being a vertical type pump that tends to fail easily it could have been replaced with one with an incorrect bore.

Thanks to all. This pump is a new unit, failed on first operation. The key is 1.28 inches long, fits snug in the crank keyway. The keyway allows the key to ride up then the milling of the crank pushes it away from the crank slightly so it impacts the oil seal. Thought about welding it then remembered...I don't weld! :D

However, I did solve it by putting a good sized punch to the rim of the keyway on the crank, on both sides. As long as someone does not want to put a longer key in it some day. Its working now and is going back to its owner, too bad I can't charge all the time I spent trying to solve this one but such is the life of a fledgling small engine guy.

Just to let some of you know, my shop has doubled in work from last year. Had to hire a part time guy to run pickup and deliveries. Will have to expand the building if it keeps up. Thanks for all your help.

have you talked to Zack at FNA?, warranty is filed to fna, not a honda issue, some of these had key pushed up during pump assembly, crank taper pushes key out on angle and rubs on engine pto seal, if key raises too high the crank spins in pump, bore is worn and loose on shaft, key wont stay put
