OverHead Valve Adjustment Question

Postby 1998Scotts » Sat Nov 29, 2014 1:32 pm

Would someone care to run through a quick explanation on how to adjust the valves on a one cylinder Briggs? I need to know what tools are needed to do that with, what the valve clearances should be set at and is the process similar for the vtwin briggs.

I know that a feeler gauge is one of the tools needed to do valve adjustment here is one at northerntool.com could someone tell me if this would be an appropriate feeler gauge to use on checking and adjusting valve clearances on briggs motors.

Download the Single Cylinder OHV service manual from the download forum (Briggs manual topic) and it will have the info you need on how to adjust and to what specs. It will pop-up in view mode and you select download arrow from there at the top of the screen.

The set screws are usually a trox bit type with some being an allen type. For torquing the set screw use 1/4 inch-pound wrench.

The other tools are basic tools a good set of feeler gauges, a set sockets, a few wrenches, and either the valve cover gaskets or RTV depending on the engine in question. And yes those feelers linked are okay to use, I use set very similar here.

Make sure the piston is past TDC when you adjust the valves or you will cause another problem...

Re: OverHead Valve Adjustment Question Help?

Sorry for the late reply but, thanks for the responses. I took the valve cover off my mower taking a look at it. I did note there was no metal valve cover gasket just a thick dried gray around the edge of the inside of the valve cover. I don't have real strong mechanic skills and I am wandring would this gray substance I seen around the edge of the valve cover be the gasket and would that mean I need to use some of that RTV silicone on it each time I adjust the valves. I need to get a picture up of everything to show it for better explaination. I will try to do that tomorrow 12/2/14. Could someone help link me to a manual for adjusting valves I couldn't find one.

Yes that grey stuff is the RTV gasket zand that need clean it off and put new each time you adjust. You will need to use either the RTV GREY or RTV Ultra Black to replace this gasket, Your local auto parts store will have this in small tubes. I would only the small tube if you don't do many engine as this stuff tends to go solid once open even with the cap on it.

I had provided a link to the Briggs various that I post links for here but here is a direct link that I have on Google drive to Single Cylinder OHV service manual that had the valve procedure in it

Valve adjustment steps start on PDF page 24 (manual page 21). As for the clearances you didn't post you engine numbers but in section 12 of the same manual there are charts for various engine series that have the specs listed.

Although Briggs switched from gaskets to RTV , did the actual cover size change or will the gaskets for previous engine still fit?

They still fit. I replace them w/ a gasket. Silicone is a pain.
