kohler aegis 775 drops a cylinder

Postby plotthound » Wed Jan 07, 2015 5:23 pm

my 2012 argo has the kohler 775 horizontal EFI in it.periodacally it will drop a cylinder whether at idle or under load,i made sure the connections were tight on the coil wire and changed the plugs to no avail.checked the mil code and get a 61.could this be a coil going bad? its the rear cylinder on the machine.

cheers

Code 61 with nothing else means there's no codes stored. 61 is "End of Data" flag - if no codes come before that, there's no codes stored.

Excellent thought - that would be one of the first things I'd be looking at - the grounds - used to be a very common thing on cars when I worked at the Ford dealer - loose grounds or corroded wires cause all kinds of weird stuff. if it was in my shop, I'd have it hooked up to the DSO (Snap-On Vantage) and run it til cylinder drops out while monitoring suspected channels along with the spark waveforms on both plug wires - the graphed spark line can tell a lot to an experienced tech with both sides to compare.. (much like hooking your car up to those old fashioned Sun-Tune machines some auto shops had back in the 70's and 80's )

Boy haven't work on one of those Sun machines since the mid 80's. Marshall Space Flight had one that was about half the size of the vehicles they serviced. They couldn't keep it out the weather and the printer clutches would rust-up when not in use.

Plott if you suspect a failing coil pack you could always swap them around and the problem moves to the other cylinder then you would know.

Good to hear. I think sometimes we tend to overlook the obvious when dealing with EFI. We tend to want to think the electronics is the trouble.

About as bad as that connection I had last year on a Cub Cadet starter reply where the wire to connector crimp would let voltage to register until it got loaded. It was the power feed going to ignition switch from the battery side of the relay.

As for standing your head it seems to be getting a lot hardier working automobiles. I can't even my places where the problems are. On a S10 I had to partially pull the engine just to get a bolt so I remove the head.
