Timing Valves on GCV 160

Postby dunoon2 » Wed Jan 21, 2015 6:44 pm

Just acquired a log splitter with a Honda Gcv160. It has no compression, removing the spark plug checking the piston moves, removed valve cover and everything there looks normal. So I'm planning to split engine and check parts. My question is what are the timing marks to reset the cam in the right position. Thanks for any information.

Before you yank that thing all apart; make sure the valves are closing completely. Did you do a leak down? Bottom line: make sure you cover your bases before you do all of that work pulling it apart.

I had to look that up as not that familiar all those acronyms.

But what the fellows are suggesting Richard is do all the non-invasive tests first so at least you have an idea what to look for and it may not require a complete tear down and may save you some time by not having to remove the engine.

No compression can be cause by things like a valve not seating fully, blown gasket or something major like hole in the piston but that leak-down test itself will at least point you in the general direction where problem lays.

Like a lot of novice techs out there I didn't have even a leak-down tester during my first couple years but I had a good working knowledge of engines. I did waste a lot time chasing my tail on some repairs by doing work that was unnecessary or pointless.

Finally had a chance to get back to that engine. Removed the carb and can hear a leak in the valve, how can I reseat the valve without removing the piston? I checked the timing and it's spot on.

Hmmm. I don't know as I haven't ever been into one these engines before with this style of cylinder. I be watching this thread to see if I can learn something new here too.

YOU cant service valves without a complete teardown on those stupid engines - you have to split the crankcase, pull crank and piston, to gain access to service valves - may just as soon shortblock it for the time you might spend servicing valves - or repower with an engine that you can actually get the head off of.
