Needs a new piston, Really?

Postby KE4AVB » Fri Jan 23, 2015 12:16 pm

That what the customer said in the title.

I had a customer bring in his new Christmas toy this week because it quit running and I gave him the bad news.

He questioned why such an high estimate for repairs and asked why it not covered by the warranty. In my opinion it appears to be straight gassed. He carrying back to dealer that he brought from but I think he is out luck on this one.

Here's a picture of the piston before I put the engine back together. Needs a new piston and cylinder.

Yikes! Chainsaw? Snow blower? Is the damage only at the exhaust port?

Shindaiwa concrete saw, Exhaust port mainly. The cylinder was not as bad but didn't take a picture of it.

I think he made the same mistake I had made several years ago simply pickup the wrong fuel can. I mistake cost me two cheap leaf blowers the same day. This customer mistake is going cost him over 500.00 for that one.

Hmm since when does Shindaiwa make a concrete saw? They Haven't made them since 2008 or thereabouts when Kioritz/Echo and Shindaiwa merged to make Yamabiko Corp if its a brand new one, must be new (Really old) old stock.. wow... My guess was Stihl because of the color of the plastic in the photo.

Brian, I don't if brand new I was just taking the customer's word on that but it sure looked new. I haven't haven't anything like that before as matter of fact it is the first Shindaiwa I have seen in my shop.

We did have an user over on the AnswerArmy that was sold an 2001 Husky as a 2011 model on Ebay. We haven't heard back from him since we replied to him as to its age other he was going take it to a trusted dealer he knew. It look very new too but I suspect a very good restore job.

I got inking of something he got plan to recover his money but I be sure. It is just a feeling I got when he mumble insurance as he was leaving.
