Generac 4000XL Generator won't stay running

Postby sblg43 » Mon Jan 26, 2015 8:41 pm

As stated in the title, I can't seem to get this Generac generator to stay running.

Generac 4000Xl with a Generac 220 engine
Engine ID = EHC-00951-0
Serial = 7100194

The owner says that it was running this past summer. Now it won't stay running.
Gas is from this past summer. Fuel line has good flow (gravity fed). Original carb was ultrasonically cleaned. Good spark.

This unit will start right up on the first pull and seems to run strong - but only for a few seconds (5-20). Then it will shut down (stall).
There is a low oil sensor that is NOT lit up and the actual oil level is good.
I was convinced that this was a carburetor issue and it was easier to get a new carb than to find a rebuild kit so....
A new carburetor was put on it this morning but no change :shock:

I don't know much about generators - could there be something about the power/electric end of this unit that would shut down the engine - maybe some safety feature to protect the unit?

We have had several of them - all did the same thing - Cause was the oil pressure switch - but those were pressure lubricated engines.. but they would do exactly that - start, run 5-10 seconds and quit. You mention low oil sensor, are you sure it isn't a switch? Try running it with wires disconnected from it, if it stays running then you either got oil pressure failure or a bad switch.

Got it!

Found the oil pressure switch and unplugged it. Started the unit up and after a bit of a warm up, good as gold!

Thank you.

Now to order that switch.

I also found a video on youtube that fixes the exact same problem.
