generator missing the 115/240 volt recepticle

Postby plotthound » Tue Jan 27, 2015 8:09 am

onto the service of generator number 2,its a Honda EB 4000 with the 115/240 volt receptacle missing.someone must have broke it removing the twist lock plug so they just marreted the wire ends.this part is no longer available through Honda but Leviton makes a receptacle.can I just buy a Leviton twist lock receptacle and wire it in?was not sure what all is involved because I have not got a service manual for it yet.

thanks

Should not be problem as long as you make it fit. Be aware that the 120/240 comes in different amp ratings which will have different shape receptacles and mating plugs; otherwords, the 15a twist lock plug will not work in the 20a twist lock receptacle nor will 20a plug fit in the 15a receptacle.

That will be the 30A receptacle, the Leavitt piece should work just fine. Make sure you wire it correctly.

In addition to finding a manual, Better yet find an electrician friend familiar with generator installations who knows how to wire up house wiring , which is pretty much the same as wiring up these outlets - *usually*

It will probably have 4 wires - 2 hot (120v+120V = 240V) which are *usually* black and red and a Neutral (usually white) and a ground (usually Green) - it depends on the requirements and doing it the wrong way can be harmful or fatal - service manual should detail which wire is which - without actually seeing what you're looking at, it's really difficult to offer advice :)

I don't recall ever seeing a " 115/240 volt receptacle".....everything I have seen is one or the other

True.. but if you stick a paper clip in one of the slots, odds are good you'll be sucking on 115v if not more... :)

OTOH, Some generators did have a "120v/240v" label above the outlets cluster... I remember seeing one, never really thought about it until just now but that was centered between the 3 outlets (2 120's and 1 240) but I cannot imagine they'd have been typo blind enough to put "115/240"

Honda is using a 4PDT switch to do the switching.

The L14-30, the 30 amp receptacle common on many generators is a 125/250v receptacle (rated voltage). Basically, 120/240 volts means it has 4 wires.

A 240 volt receptacle has two hots and a ground - example: NEMA 6-15
A 120 volt receptacle has one hot, a neutral, and a ground - example: NEMA 5-15
A 120/240 volt receptacle has two hots, a neutral, and a ground. Depending on the connections used you can get the different voltages out of it.
