Briggs & Stratton Cylinder Question

Postby Craftsman GT » Sat Feb 14, 2015 1:02 am

Hi, I was wondering if there is anyway to tell if a Briggs engine is an iron bore or aluminum bore by the model and type number? I've got an 8HP 190403 3044-01 on a 1986 Simplicity 860 Snowblower and want to know if it's an iron or aluminum bore. Thanks

here is another method to identify cylinder type.

the engine replacement catalog is published annually. Each engine model in the catalog has a description and the type of cylinder bore is identified. I keep all the older issues to determine the bore. your engine is an aluminum bore.

If you're thinking about replacing the rings and your bore is within wear limits, that chrome ring kit is fantastic. No honing to do, just pop the rings in and they cut themselves into the bore. The kit consists of 8 rings and are orientation specific. I've got the diagram for the ring orientation, so if you decide to go that route, give me a holler.

Is there any advantage of the "Kool-Bore" aluminum bore over a cast iron bore? I don't understand why they would use aluminum instead of iron

Weight, Cost, heat transfer properties.. but mostly cost

I would think cast iron is cheaper.

the cost to install a liner to a aluminum block is much more than just running plain aluminum bore

- Blocks made of aluminum due to weight savings - Imagine trying to push a walk behind lawnmower where the whole engine was cast iron - not to mention the need to make deck far heavier to support the added weight, the fact that cast iron does not have much "flex" to it (hit a rock with blade, get a new engine)
