rebuilding Tecumseh HH70-140038C

I inherited a 1978 Ariens rear tine tiller with this 7 HP engine on it. It hasn't been used for at least 15 years. I can turn the engine output pulleys (one fwd & one reverse) by hand, so it's not locked up. I'm wondering how much I should rebuild before even trying to start it. Aside from the obvious plug, air filter, gas tank wash-out, fuel line replacement, and general cleanup, should I go ahead and rebuild the carburetor? What about the condensor & contacts? I've never worked on an engine this old, so looking for any pointers from the experts. Thanks

I would also change the oil. It may have water in it. It is always a good idea to rebuild the carburetor on something that has sat so long. The kit is readily available. Beyond that, I would add fresh fuel and try to start her. If she starts up, you will then have a good idea of the running condition. Changing points and condenser is a bit more involved. I wouldn't go there until you have to...which may be never. It is not a difficult thing to do, but it does involve removing the blower shroud, the flywheel and whatever linkage is in your way. MH

Beore you spend any time or money on it, make sure it has oil in it, put a little gas in the cylinder, and try it. It it fires on that, good, take it from there, with an oil change and whatever else it needs.
If it doesn't, see if it has spark and compression. Spark shouldn't be too hard to restore, but compression could be, depending on what's wrong.
Once you know it wants to run, then you can rebuild the carb, clean the gas tank, etc.
