Kohler engine swap replacement ?

Postby Poboy » Sun Feb 23, 2014 8:36 pm

Newbie here. I have a Kohler Courage 25 hp mounted on my toro 50 in timecutter mower my wife purchased in late 2010 just before we met. It gave me about 2 good seasons, approx 100 hours before it developed a leak while I was mowing and before I knew it the motor was toast. It was so disheartening because I religiously changed the oil and filter. That luckily was the last cut of the year and I've been saving to get another engine ever since. She payed about 3300 from the dealership, and i need to get this one back in service soon as i cant afford a new one. The motor is a Courage 25 SV730S, Spec# SV730-0029, serial # 4002708833. Was wondering if I can put a Kohler 27 hp with the same shaft size in my zero or do I spend 800 plus and order the exact original engine off ebay that the kohler website says is retired? I just wondered if my the 27 Courage would work in my mower? I just now my yard, approx 2 acre, in the hot southern sun surrounded by thick, tough crabgrass. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

i replaced one last year. thinking it was same as yours but on a cub cadet. i replaced it with 27hp and i had to measure shaft length and dia. and make sure key way was same. cant remember about starter but i did have to reuse the muffler. not to bad to replace over all.

Before we condemn the engine to the scrap pile could you elaborate as to how the engine failed.

On the SV740 we will need the spec number of the one your looking at as a possible replacement. There are 4 few different crankshafts used. I found 1", 1-1/8" dia plus two which I couldn't find the specs on and they have different lengths too. There shouldn't be any issue with the mounting other than you will need the correct crankshaft PTO size.

Your current engine has a 1" x 3.23" with a 6.3mm (1/4") x 3.6mm keyway and is tapped with 7/16-20 threads.

There is also a SV830-3017 or SV830-3018 that probably will work and both are 25 HP engines. You need verify the crankshaft PTO specs.

I am with GreyFox as we would like to know the kind of damage is done to your current engine. Kohler engine are usually fair tough and are repairable even with an oil failure but not always.

Does anyone know how to get moderators to delete topics that are never resolved. Things like this tend to clutter up the history of the forum without providing any real information to anyone.

Resolved or not, much of this still has some value in the replies, even if the O.P. never came back to update or note it resolved.
