Removing Carb on a Honda generator

Postby jcgarbez » Thu Mar 06, 2014 7:31 am

Hello everyboby.
I am new on this forum. I live in a wild area down in Venezuela, so I have a lot of power equipments and I need to take care of themselves by myself as the service is pretty bad here.
I am having trouble with my Honda EU30is power generator ( same as EU3000is model in the US ). Engine is a GX200.
I need to clean the carb as the gen is stalling as soon as I remove the choke, I am pretty sure it is because I have not being using it for a long time ( over a year) and I did not purge the carb before storing the gen. So I suspect the carb needs a good cleaning.
Now here is my problem : I have removed the two nuts which hold the carb ( and air fiter ) against the motor block, but the carb won't come out ! I have done this many times ( removing carb for cleaning ) on my cars, and on my trimmer, and as soon as the nuts are removed the carb can be easily lifted, but not here.
It looks it is stucked. I have bit hitting gently with a harmer as is usally done when this kind of thinhgs happened, but I still can't remove it. I have been pulling hard, nothing happened ! I have checked the gen shop manual, it looks that there is no other nuts to remove.
What would you recommend to do to remove the carb ?
Should I use a puller ?
I don't want to brreak anything ! Spare are too hard to find here, I can't afford it, and I need this gen to be back in order as you may have heard how is the situation down here in Venezuela....
Best regards,
Jean-Christophe

Hmmm.. They usually come off fairly easily. There maybe a difference in the EU30is setup but all I have access to is the parts list for the EU3000is. Honda may have changed these stud bolts to where they hold carburetor on. Here Briggs and Kohler does this with some their carburetors. Usually they are made with either with hex end or an external spline end so they can removed.

I would try removing these stud bolts to see if you get carburetor to come loose. Once you have the air cleaner assembly removed the only other thing that could be holding carburetor is two stud bolts. Take two nuts that fits the threads and put them on the stud. Now with a pair of wrenches tighten them against each other locking in place and use the outer nut to turn out the stud bolt. Hopefully them will come out easily and then carburetor should come loose.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Yeah and if loosening the studs does not loosen the carb, tap on it top, bottom, and sides with a hammer - as the gaskets do tend to take a rather firm hold after a while - Most likely the gasket has sort of "glued" the carb to the insulator block, and sometimes you have to remove the studs and whack the carb on one side or the other to pop it free of the gasket.

Did filter base come off? If not am pretty sure there is a 3rd support screw for filter base. Been a while.

Hello.
Yes, I was able to remove the carb very smoothly using the technique of removing the studs ! Thank you.
The rust has builded up badly on the studs, and they were stucked to the carb.
Now I will start dismantling the carb in order to clean it properly.
Thanks again.
