camshaft & compression release

Postby barrentine934_+ » Sun Mar 16, 2014 12:10 pm

B&S model 31C707
type 3346 G6
code 110428ZB
The compression release on the camshaft broke causing engine not to start. This is the third engine in the 31 series that i have come across in the last year.Is this a poor design or have I just been lucky to get them.Anyway I guess a new cam is going to be on order.Any suggestions or comments appreciated. Thanks,
David

It is a common issue, not much to do about it. Until warranty claims cost Briggs big bucks nothing will change.

I had 1 through the shop last year. Happened to be the only equipment I sold with that engine series on it and it came back with a broken compression release.

Just curious here. How are they failing? The only cam failure that I ran into the last four years was an exhaust lobe worn nearly flat; very little lift.

I found the compression release mechanism in the bottom of the engine sump. The pin and spring also.Looks to me like the pin either is working its way out or breaking.

Thanks kinda goes along with my thinking here. This what I am thinking as the pin is fiction fit using a plastic bushing is that the pin is simply falling out as it is not held in that tight. At least that how it is here on the 793880 gear that I have here. I was able to simply push the pin out with a small flat blade screw driver here.

Definitely a poor design and needs redesigning in my opinion so its press fit is tighter or something else.
