briggs vanguard spraying oil

Postby janaohio » Wed Mar 19, 2014 10:37 pm

hello Again everyone.

I have a

model# 35077 type 0117-01/3898 code 94012511

Oil is coming out of every orifice of this thing. there is coming out the carb. the breather, spraying out the dipstick. Only has 250 hours on the meter.
Doesn't smoke out the exhaust at all but it will shut down after about ten minutes of using the mower.

I thought it might be a head gasket but the head gaskets look new.Cylinder still has cross hatch marks on them

*****The strange thing is it didn't run unless air filter is removed. I replaced with a brand new one and it still didn't run unless air filter was removed.

I checked compression in both cylinders and got 95 but i did this while cranking the starter. I read that i should have checked it while spinning engine in reverse because of decompression system.

thanks

I have seen where engines with blown head gaskets don't smoke at all but lose a lot of oil by burning it.

If oil is coming out everywhere; you do have a problem of blow by somewhere as there is excess pressure in the crankcase. Either a blown head gasket, bad rings, warped head(s) or other compression related problems. As for the shutdown after 10 minutes this engine IPL shows it has a oil pressure switch that could be shutting the engine from the loss of oil pressure. It also can be from the loss of compression. Personally I would not run the engine anymore until I found the problem as you can be making things even worse by doing so.

Run a leak down test to see if you can isolate the problem.

Never heard of doing this beside the starter system is not capable working in reverse. The starter can run in reverse but the starter bendix won't operate; besides applying reverse voltage to the electric system will take out the alternator among other things. It can be done just not has the electric drill larger enough to do so.

Look CAREFULLY at they head gasket between the cylinder and the push rod galley. The failure is not always easy to see. Gotta get a new one anyway.

bobodu is right. I had a 28707 last week here that only smoked at start up after sitting a few days. The leak down test indicated that the cylinder was leaking into the valve galley. I could hold the flywheel at TDC bare handed even at 50 psi. The head gasket looked fairly good except that it was darken between the cylinder and the valve galley. After I replaced the gasket and torqued to specs I re-ran the leak down test. This time I could not hold it even at 15 psi; took a pull bar to hold it until I finished the test.

It still smoked a little after a week but for a well worn "99 engine not bad. The customer is just wanting it last a few more years as she is in late 90's when got her sons that could cut her lawn if she let them. She just wants to keep active. Any is better than the mosquito smoker it was last summer she said with  .

Replace both head gaskets and check the heads to if they are warped using a straight edge before reinstalling. Torque to specs using three stage torquing and the pattern recommended in the service manual. Those graphite gaskets tend to tear some and are already compressed to the sealing surface and is nearly possible to get then back exactly where they were before so always use new gaskets whenever possible.

You might wanna check the breather valve for proper operation!
