Hello, I’m hoping you guys can tell me that I am either on the right track, or that I should give up and start looking for a replacement.
I have a 6hp Tecumseh model OHH60 71194D (E), Engine Family YTPXS.1951AB. It is on a Carter Brothers Go Cart that I recently was given. Bottom line is that it will not start, won’t even try. I have made some repairs that I found needed to be done. I replaced the governor sprocket that was damaged when the push rod for the intake valve came loose and fell into the crank case, I didn’t see anything else that was damaged inside. It looks like the bolt that holds the rocker (?) in place came loose was the root cause of the failure. I also replaced gaskets as I went along. (I had it apart so now’s the time). I am not sure that I have the bolts that hold the rockers tightened to the right torque. It seemed like when I would tighten them that the valves would open as I tightened, so I just snugged the bolt tight just so that it touched the rocker but didn’t compress the valve spring, and tightened the lock nut. (Probably totally wrong) I'm wondering if the valves are opening enough to allow the fuel to flow into the compression chamber.
I should also mention that when I removed the crank case cover, the cam came out so the timing was lost, I found online what I think is the correct way to time it and that is how it is. (There is a small mark on a tooth on the sprocket attached to the crank, and one between two teeth on the cam, these are mated together)?
Another thing i am seeing is that when the motor is turned over, a mist of fuel is being blown out of the carb ( the air filter is removed) Out of time?
My questions would be:
1. does it sound like I have it timed correctly?
2. How do I know how tight to make the bolts that hold the rockers down on top of the valve springs and push rods?
3. I’m to the point where I am thinking that I need to look into either rebuilding or replacing the carb. Am I on the right track?
I know just enough about this to know that I am in over my head. Any help or guidance will be greatly appreciated.
