rotella 5w40 oil

Postby plott hound » Sat Apr 12, 2014 2:28 pm

i have been reading really good things about shell rotella oil.seems like tons of people use it in their small engines and power sport engines.i recently put 10w30 rotella oil in my 1998 Honda foreman and 2012 argo with a 31 hp aegis engine.both seem to run real smooth of this oil.the 31 hp aegis calls for 5w30 oil below 0 deg f,my question is can I use 5w40 rotella as a substitute?or should I stick to a 5w30 brand?

cheers :D

You would probably want to use 5W30- The brand does not matter, it is the weight and more especially the API Service classification of the oil.

5w40 is an oil with the pour point of a 5 Wt oil, but the lubricating characteristics of a 40W oil it IS a little bit heavy under high temperature/shear loads and considering how much it would cost to REPLACE that Aegis or rebuild it, I would want to be very careful to read the owner's manual and follow the MANUFACTURER's (Kohler) Recommendations It would be foolish for any professional to recommend any thing else... even if THEY may personally feel otherwise.
