toro PP 20332 mower

Postby jwales » Sun Jul 13, 2014 8:27 pm

toro personal pace, model 20332, serial 290088118. neighbor is kind og hard on equipment. he dropped it off said it did not run. cleaned carb, rebiuld kit, fuel line and its good to go.........except for bad vibration. apparently he hit a stump or something. put a differnet blade on problem solved, no bent shaft! the next problem i have is the mower pulls to the right as i am mowing. when i lifht the the rear wheels and engage the drive both wheels turn. when its on the ground it seems like the left wheel is turning faster/stronger than the left???
any thoughts on what is the cause or what to check?
thanks.

thanks. i did look at the gears on the shaft, they appear to be fine, no wear. the wheels(rear wheel drive) have a plastic gear (not a good design IMO) and they appear to have been replaced not long ago. they have more tread than the front tires.

Check drive shaft bushings at the height adjusters. I have seen them rusted and binding on other self-propels. Same system as most rear wheel differentials wheel one can turn more in turns preventing digging up of the turf. With one side binding it is allowing one side to turn faster than the other.

So i blocked up the back. Pushed handle to engage drive and both wheels turn and I cannot stop either with my hand so the tranny seems to be turning fine?? In examining the axel. there is no play, corrosion or restrictions. everything turns freely. The axel moves side to side, pushing on the left(near tranny box) the axel moves a quater inch or so and then moves back to original position (spring loaded?)
one of the wheels gears is already showing signs of wear(furthest from tranny box). metal gears on axel look fine. I suppose that alighnment might be the next thing but is does not look like there is anything to work with here. Anybody else have this problem?? I e-mailed Toro and asked if there was a solution they have (re)designed to eliminate this problem. Have not heard back from them yet. I have a PP that is 6 years older and that model has metal gear on the rear drive wheel and have had no problem.

Thanks

Simple things first: Check wheel alignment, and compare diameters side to side. front and rear.

Bent axle or wheel pointing slightly right from straight ahead, you got a pull - same basic principles as automotive wheel alignment.
