Kohler CV15S Valve Cover - Gasket Maker

Kohler CV15S

The valve cover on the CV15S does not have a gasket. The service manual says to put a 1/16" bead of gasket maker. What gasket maker do you recommend? I know permatex makes different kinds, but not sure which one to use or if there is a better brand.

Also, any tips on applying the gasket maker? 1/16" bead is a very fine bead and the tubes of gasket maker I've seen do not have tapered tips. Suggestions?

I use the orange high temp silicone.

Second the orange Hi Temp. That one does come with a tapered tip. Just cut it off at the right place. I never use the tip though because you only get one use from it.

That why you are should remove the tip when done and put the cap on. After the sets up in the tip you simply remove it so can use the tip later. The stuff in the tube will still setup over time but I usually get a couple months of use out it this way. You just got to keep track of the tip for later use.

As for the sealant I use Prematex Ultra Grey. For me it doesn't standout like a sore thumb.

+1 - Except, we buy this stuff in larger quantity but smaller size half ounce tubes - they do not come with a tapered tip though.. however, there is a trick I use -

open it from the *wrong end* - cut off a corner of the tube and squeeze from the top , out the bottom you get the results of a tip, and you can store any leftover in a ziploc bag , and using a straw, suck the air out of the baggie when sealing it (and leave a big bead covering the cut opening of the tube) - there is a lot less waste if the stuff *does* set up, and much easier to unplug as well. :)

Permatex item # 22074 ultra grey, and we usually buy a half dozen tubes at a time from JEGS Automotive.

I posted this earlier then read it, but for some reason the post evaporated???? :? :?:

You can review permatex gasket makers types here at this link.
http://www.permatex.com/products-2/prod ... ket-makers

I usually use the Permatex ultra copper (orange) in 3 oz tubes as a one size fits all.(sensor safe, oil resistance, antifreeze resistant, high heat rated, etc) and can't sleep if I don't have a spare tube handy at all times. ;)
It can be user as a gasket maker and can be used as exhaust manifold gasket and when the manifold is removed later it will look like thin melted copper gasket.

I also use the high temp red as a gasket maker for automobile valve covers and at the ends of intake manifolds (instead of the cork or rubber OEM gaskets) at the end of auto intake manifolds. On valve cover gaskets do not torque down the fresh sealant at first, let the silicone slightly dry if you have time then set the cover and finger snug the bolts, then next day gently tighten so as to leave a 1/8 thickness under the cover, but do not allow excess to squeeze drip inside a engine as it will block oil return holes, etc. The left over will store for a while if you will remove the nozzle replace the cap and place all in a good zip loc sealed bag with the air squeezed out and store in area not subjected to high ambient heat. When ready to reuse the nozzle, push out the dried sealant with a old welding rod. I bought the larger caulking gun type tubes of sealants for larger jobs, but any left overs in the caulking gun type tubes will not store for very long, even when resealed good. :(
