12V low pressure fuel pump ??s

Postby jwales » Wed Jul 23, 2014 9:40 am

Have a neighbor with lawn tractor that had a 20 hp twin B&S with vacuum fuel pump. Destroyed the engine and had a 17 hp B&S OHV that was a gravity feed fuel set-up. Works "fine" when tank is full and mowing level ground but cuts out on inclines and lower fuel levels, duh  I have read in a couple threads that there are low flow or low pressure 12 volt fuel pumps. Any recomendations on what low pressure or flow would be appropriate for this application?? Would it be consistant with different engine brands? Any recomendations on fuel pump brands? And finally are they relatively simple/straight forweard to install?

Thanks for the discussion.

If the tank is not located completely higher than the carb, you'll have that problem. Could also be a partially blocked fuel line or fitting at tank bottom.

Ideally, if ya run a fuel pump, the carb, or inlet needle seat should be changed out to one with a smaller seat dia. It will prolly work OK anyways, but I would change it out.
The other thing is, if you are running a 12v pump, you should have a low oil switch to kill the pump, or some other setup.
The best and easiest way is to hook up a vac/pulse pump that works on crankcase pulse/pressure. They come stock on a lot of briggs motors . Just GOOGLE it. Or fleabay will have a bunch of em.

Most electric fuel pumps will generate too pressure for the carburetor float and needle to overcome. It would be better to stick the vacuum impulse pump for your purpose. It is easy to convent over by simply drilling a hole in the valve cover and adding the impulse hose. (remember to remove the cover when doing this to keep the metal filings out of the engine.) The only problem that might arise is that carburetor is setup for gravity fed fuel system and may require changing out the float needle and seat.

If you post engine model and type number we might let you want parts you might need beside the fuel pump and impulse line. Not all carburetors can be converted and some don't need changing.
