craftsman 358.351800 will not start

Postby KeithA » Wed Jul 23, 2014 11:05 am

Hi friends.
It's been awhile, life has a way of putting a damper on business.
We are doing "better" now.

Another 2 cycle problem.
Did I tell you how much I dislike 2 cycle.
Came in with tough to start no high end power, spongy primer bulb.
Spark is present on my Briggs spark tester. jumps the gap but kind of yellow.
screen is clean on muffler.
Thumb pops off plug hole when pulled over. I know very scientific :o
Update... cylinder and ring appears good.

One worry... plug is clean gray light gray on center electrode NO soot.

My fresh gas.
New carb, new primer new fuel lines and gas filter new plug.

Now no start even a shoot of carb cleaner and even ether not a pop. :(

Pull the muffler, check the rings, piston, and cylinder. Struck rings can loss compression and 2 cycles need 100 psi to pop. Those non plated cylinders can wear fairly quickly especially with the NCC pistons are used.

It also could be a restricted muffler especially if it is a CAT version. Try starting without the muffler.

Also make sure that cylinder mounting bolts are torque properly. I have seen several saw here where these were loose.

One thing to check is the coil mounting.
I find a lot of these have loose or even missing screws and are able to move about causing weak or intermittent spark. There are generally 2 coarse thread screws holding the coil in place, but the saw's vibrations cause them to back off. When saws have a loose coil, they can rev up and then dog it and die. MH
