Kohler CV490S on a craftsman rider

Postby jwales » Mon Sep 08, 2014 12:33 pm

Kohler 17 hp, model: CV490S, spec: 27508, Serial: 3217650663.
Problem; when I turn the key I get maybe 2 revolutions(watching flywheel) and stops.
I had the battery charger on it and it showed it was charged. Flywheel key is good and flywheel torqed to spec. Valves adjusted. Left the charger on and will give it a day to see if that is the problem. Anything else I may want to check/adjust for this type of problem?? Thanks.

Any anecdotal information on these engines??

Check engine mounting bolts, check all battery cable connections at battery , and at engine frame, solenoid , etc.

Better yet, learn how to do a voltage drop test, which would pinpoint electrical problems like that.
also check compression, if the ACR failed, you may have too much compression (over 110 PSI, I'd say compression release not working or valves not adjusted right)

Aren't kohler valves hydraulic so no adjustment? chargers stop on voltage so battery may still be too weak.

You do realize the motor has hydraulic lifters, right?? Also three types of rocker arm configurations. The adjustable lash units require that you hold the bled down lifters in the compressed mode while ya adj. the clearance. Did you BLEED the lifters down???
Go here and get ya a manual :http://www.kohlerengines.com/manuals/landing.htm
