finding kill wire on 8.5 Briggs I/C vertical?

Postby MikeInMaine » Sun Jan 19, 2014 12:37 pm

Hi, I have an older Briggs 8.5 I/C vertical on a salt/sand spreader I just bought. There's a remote start and throttle control harness hooked up but no kill switch. The motor has an electric starter. Motor starts and run great (after I took the carb apart and cleaned it) but i can't stop it from my truck cab. Have to knock the spark plug wire off to stop it. Would like to put a kill switch on.

Can't find a model/type number on the engine but it looks similar to a 196707, type 015501 that I found on ebay.

I found an unconnected two wire connector peeking out from under the fuel tank, next to the starter. It has a red and a black wire in it. I tested it with the engine not running and the black goes to ground and the red doesn't.

Might one of these be the kill wire? I found a parts diagram at b&s that shows a two wire connector in this general area labeled "stop wire". However, I am concerned that this connector might be for a battery charging circuit so i don't want to just ground out the red wire while the engine is running.. might damage it.

Any ideas on how to identify these wires' purpose w/o disassembling the engine covers?

Thanks!

a tad more info.. this ebay pic of a briggs stator shows a red/black connector exactly like mine.. so I'm guessing it IS the charging circuit I'm looking at.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Briggs-Stratton-15-5HP-Intek-I-C-OHV-28N707-Engine-Stator-/150978567760?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2327061e50

can I hook that directly to my battery or does it need to be switched or diode protected?

still.. any ideas on where to look for the kill wire?

The red wire is the battery charge connection, the diode is the black lump at the plug. Connect it to the battery side of the solenoid. The black is an ac connection designed for lights etc on a tractor application, you can ignore it. There should be a another wire coming off the coil to shut the engine off, a simple on-off toggle switch wired to ground and you are in business. Do NOT feed battery power to this wire.

Thanks RoyM!!!!

I took another really good look-see and cannot find a wire coming off the coil. I thought maybe it was integrated with the throttle mechanism in some "go to idle and kill the engine at the same time" way, but no joy. Guess I will pull the accessories and cover.

Good news is that it does have a battery charger built-in!

Thanks again

As mentioned, the plug is for charging, etc.
Look on the throttle control plate ( where the T cable connects) sometimes theres a threaded stud that you would hook your kill wire to. If you look behind it you should see a thin black wire sneeking up under the shroud. Sometimes that same wire would connect to a tang that gets grounded out when the T-cable is moved all the way to slow.
The numbers should be stamped in the metal shroud above the spark plug, or on top of the valve cover if OHV.

Edit: Apparently it doesnt have that setup, so yeah, best pull the shroud and see whats up.

Simplest thing to do: pull the blower housing off 3 or 4 bolts (probably have to remove starter cover first if it has one) coil will be right there above the flywheel, underneath the coil you will find *either* a black wire coming off bottom of coil, OR you will find a bare male flat spade terminal sticking out the side which you can clip your ground wire to.

If you find the small black wire coming off the coil, trace it away from the coil to see where it ends up - that's where you'll hook your kill switch.

It's a simple connection to ground to kill engine, so a simple on-off switch will do (Though, you want a NORMALLY CLOSED when in Off position, which is the opposite of most 12V toggle switches which are N.O. for lighting.. though you CAN use one of those and use a sharpie to write On and Off positions for the switch. )

I also have a B&S Mod. 131232 on a pressure washer. It has no switch at the present time and I am assumming that the guy that owns it would have to choke the engine to get it stopped. I am going to put a simple toggle or push button switch on it for him. Ground one side of the switch and run the other side to the little black wire on the throttle bracket :D

Thank You for you help and input :D

I might suggest a momentary push button....nothing worse that forgetting to turn it back on next year. Done that a few times myself.
