Just to be clear...
Are you saying that 104 years of Briggs and Stratton R & D is wrong?

That's not quite true....you said "in lawnmowers and almost all outdoor equipment, i use a 15w40 diesel oil."
You have great future in politics. I wouldn't run that in anything that sees less than a constant 100 degrees. But what do I know ...right?

[quote="Matt"]in lawnmowers and almost all outdoor equipment, i use a 15w40 diesel oil.

That sounds like a great way to immediately VOID the manufacture's warranty including any claim for repairs/replacement if it specifies otherwise as to oil type/wt!?
I will defer the definitive answer to our Professional Tech members here who do warranty repairs.

Marc wrote:I have an old TORO 3 speed OHV self propelled 21 or 22" mower. I believe that it has a Briggs motor but not absolutely sure. I can not find original manual and believe that metal serial # face plate has fallen off.
Near the operating handle there is a model number #56-6460 and near the front on the lower body of the mower is the #530.

I am attempting to determine what would be the appropriate oil to use in maintaining the mower. Ideally a source to the manual would be wonderful.

As a newbie to this forum, I apologize for such a simplistic query.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Matt, can you post the API code from oil container that your running? Many brands of motor oil sold for diesel engine use are compatible with gasoline engine use. I just want to see what formula your running. The SAE numbers just specifics the viscosity of the oil. SAE has one set rating numbers for motor and a separate viscosity rating system for gear, axle, and manual transmission oils. The API code relates to specific type of oils and additives.

I was wondering if the manual would have specified a non-detergent oil as it was manufactured/purchased around 1986.

No, you wanna use detergent oil. I just use 10W-30 if its still cold in the am to be safe. Otherwise I use 30wt detergent.
'Course any thread/post about oil will generate a chitload of differing opinions.........

You can get ya a manual here: https://lookup3.toro.com/request/request.cfm

Did I say that?????

And you didn't get the API code....just a generic graph from Amsoil...
And Briggs never recommends using a 15 weight at all. Let alone a 40 weight.
