Snapper

Had a old snapper given to me. Model 146702 0129 01 6605111. 66 model. It runs for short time. Let cool then cranks back up. When was given to me I cleaned carb and gas tank put new fuel lines. I pretty much know it needs new coil. As I don't like points. My question is I want to make this electronic ignition. What part number do I need for coil. It can be aftermarket I don't care. I don't even know horsepower for this engine it is wore off. I think it is a 6hp motor. Thanks.

Probably the 398811 coil but not 100% sure though. Other may know more about if it fit and work. Some engines can't be converted.

Right - that's likely where starfire's 398811 part number come from - Not sure, but that may be correct - I don't think they had the 4-leg coil that "recent" as 1966, so likely that'll be the magnetron coil kit you would need, *I THINK* - I dont think that model-type is in current parts lookup catalogs, may have to go back to old paper or microfiche manuals to get part number and then follow the supercesion data up to get the current coil part number (I think 398811 is now being replaced by yet a newer coil, number starting with 590... )

It is a two leg coil, current breaker point coil part number is 298968. Just don't know if it is classed as a 5 hp (130000) or in the 7-16 range for the conversion.

It is just got to change last two digits to "99" and add the dashes ie 146702-0129-99

Yeah I heard you have to change trim in model number to 99 suppose to cover all of them.

Yeah - I never looked, but some model series just are no longer in the parts lookup software - I know about the -99 - I never enter the trim when entering model-type, so they always come up for me if they even exist, then just pick the most appropriate one, or -99 as default if nothing else matches up.

I found one vendor where I can just enter the type and trim to find Briggs engine IPLs, sure helps on those partial numbers. Proved to usefully this week as I had one engine with most of the model number was eaten way by ammonia fertilizer; just first two digits were readable then the type and trim.

And of Course Power Portal does it too, Just need to know the general series.
