Might be Champion did this but I would stick with the manufacture's specs as there can performance relate issues if you don't as Briggs and Stratton did change the engine specs and today coils and carburetor mixture settings can be sensitive to incorrect specs.
I have seen engines here where all I did was to put in a correctly gapped spec plug that fix the reported problems.
Edit: One other thing relate to plug gap is ignition timing. By setting to other than specs shifts the ignition timing.
