Appears you need remove the crankshaft and washer. Service manual doesn't mention anything removing those outside bolts or screws. Basically from what gather is the same as removing a Briggs flywheel. You do need use a puller to remove it from the taper shaft.

Apparently you didn't bother to get ya a SERVICE MANUAL, iffen' you did, you dang well would have known that yer motor HAS POINTS, and they ain't under the flywheel! As was aptly POINTED out by BG, whattayathink????

Attitude adjustment???? Trust me, the only thing that needs adjustin', is yer POINTS! Oh, thats right...............yer motor ain't got no points!!!! Right?

hey is that a deere in the headlight look there? should be because if you look back and read with your eyes open u will queerly i mean clearly see i never said anything about the points. by the way who needs and manual when we all got smarts a!!!! like u who knows everything.

Thanks for the reminder (Seeing the picture brought back the memories!) - I now DO recall seeing (They were very rare) the Breakerless ignitions - They have a sort of Guitar Slide shaped coil and a trigger module that triggers off firing pins on the side of the flywheel. But , as Deere said (even though rather "not-nice") , you need to grab the service manual - The system is described in there with testing procedures - There's only a winding on the "alternator" under the flywheel, everything else is external to the flywheel so, again, one wonders why you need to remove flywheel, without first doing some testing to determine where the problem lies...

They may have a screen and/or a big "pulley" that can do double duty as a rope-windup starter (wrap rope around it for each pull) , or a starter-generator application (It has a V-shaped groove for belt) - They are mounted 2 ways - they may be attached to flywheel with 4 screws around the outer perimeter, or they may be bolted in with 2 bolts on either side of the flywheel nut - Those kind will have to be removed to remove flywheel nut, and the bolt holes they used are then used to hook in your flywheel puller.

But I actually do recall now having worked on one of these breakerless magneto systems - they are not at all complicated - just do the simple step by step tests in the service manual - if you need one, and can't find the K series service manual at Kohler, It is in the downloads area at bgsengineclinic.com/downloads (Kohler K Series cast Iron Service Manual)

Please look at the K161 IPL. Page 64. According this there is a good possible of either version of ignition system. There several versions that would be under the flywheel.

And maybe he just wants to look under the flywheel for other damage.

Just two - The breakerless system has the AC generator winding as part of (or where) the alternator is mounted. There other is the one with ignition coil mounted under flywheel, but that is breaker point ignition.

There are 3 possible versions of ignition system on that or any K series cast iron Kohler - Battery Ignition (Automotive type, but internal ballast coil, with points mounted by and driven off of camshaft) , Magneto Ignition which has a coil much like tecumseh (and indeed, tecumseh 30560A coil can replace it) under the flywheel, and breaker points mounted in the same location as the battery ignition system, and, the rare one that I forgot all about - The breakerless system that uses a coil mounted outside the engine (but it looks more like a big-@$$ guitar slide with a flat mounting flange) , the trigger coil (mounts under blower housing , outside flywheel, fires off trigger pins on the flywheel like some of the Tecumseh OHH solid state did) , the control box (shown in his picture tucked between fuel pump area and the crankcase cover plate/flywheel backing plate) , and the AC Generator which is mounted under flywheel , and with alternator equipped engines, incorporated with alternator.

True but waiting on feedback on that - his original post , he says " problem is not firing." - so one would assume he is looking for some diagnostic help, the fact that he is not familiar enough with the flywheel to know how it comes off would tend to lead one to say "Don't waste time looking until you HAVE TO" - and do the correct no-spark diagnostics before tearing all the way into the flywheel and possibly damaging components that you'd be lucky to find even in "good, used" condition, much less new.

It is kind of like a doctor cutting your chest open before he knows that you're having a heart attack rather than just heartburn.

the wire goes under the flywheel. your no spark issue never said i didnt know what i was doing and i never said i didnt have a manual or havent looked over it either. i just wanted to know about the two screws thats all. i know how to get flywheel off just didnt know about the screws one is broken and the other is still there. everybody just jumps the gun because someone asked a simple ? i applogize to all thanks again for all comments and the help.

Deere needs a big attitude adjustment and has for quite a while.
Snarky and smart ass replies get real old real fast, and this has just been going on toooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo long.
