Briggs coil swap?

Can I swap on a coil off a newer non-points machine? Does it need the flywheel, too, or will new coil work with current flywheel? No spark currently and would like to not use points.

Would need the number off the donor engine and I assuming the numbers you posted is the receiver engine. Possible just depends on the engines involved.

Should be possible without changing the flywheel. Just check the polarity of the flywheel magnets just in case they are reversed which would make the coil from donor inoperative due the reverse magnetism.

Remember if you remove the points plug the plunger hole or you will have an oil leak.

It will work just fine. Cut the wires leading behind the flywheel, install and gap the armature, run the ground wire to the shut off, install the blower housing and forget it. I would leave the points in but as was mentioned if you remove them plug the plunger hole.
No need to change the flywheel, polarity was only an issue on pre 1981 cast iron engines.

You can also get a clip on CDI module for most briggs engines called a Briggs and Stratton Magnetron Ignition module and that has everything you need to convert you old coil / points set up to CDI

Thanks for that piece of info. I knew there some engines that had reverse polarity just don't know much beyond that until now. Again thanks. Without the date code I was a little the dark anyway.

If was reversed and a donor flywheel wasn't available there is always the ignitor module (sometimes call an "Atom module") to fall back on if I understand things correctly.

The only problem there I think would have been the flywheel polarity which an universal ignitor module could solve and is about the same price here for me.
I haven't use that module since the 80's and at that time I wasn't in it other than doing my own repairs.

BTW that clip on Briggs module is PN 394970 if anyone is needing that number. It not usually listed in the manuals anywhere I have seen.
