Run away RPM

Postby JandL » Sat May 24, 2014 7:28 pm

Greetings,

I have a new Husqvarna riding lawn mower with a 52 inch deck model 960450046, serial 032914a022410.

Engine is a B&S: model; 44R877, Type; 0001G1; Code; 140322YG.

I have done a governor reset, inspected governor springs and found them to be in the correct position. Any start attempt the engine fires and accelerates to a very high RPM. I of course shut it off before it reaches whatever top speed its going for. The governor shaft will turn about 1/5 of a circle, it is tight with little in and out play. This is a new machine, never sold, brought to me by a local store here for repair. Any thoughts or ideas would be helpful.

Well, if ya reset the gov correctly, then its likely aan internal issue.
1 Rotate the throttle lever on carb to fully open position and hold in position.
2 Loosen gov arm on shaft and rotate SHAFT counterclockwise ( or same direction the arm moved when ya opened throttle) 'till it stops, then tighten arm.
Should be good to go.

Warranty??

J and L,

Are you a Briggs authorized service that can file for warranty coverage?

Engine is a B&S: model; 44R877, Type; 0001G1; Code; 140322YG.
According to the date code your engine was manufactured March 22, 2014.

Check the carburetor and make sure that the throttle plate (butterfly) is still in place and working correctly. Other than that it would require going inside and checking the governor itself and the associated parts.

Yes, I am an Authorized B&S repair center, I just wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything. Will see what the B&S area rep says Tuesday.

It is always better to ask when your not sure. Just a little reassurance can go a long way sometimes when come to peace of mind. Good luck Tuesday. They should cover whatever work needed; unless, they see for their selves as to what happened.

I have ask some what seem now to be very dumb questions over the years but I truly was needing the answers for I things didn't know the answers to. Most folks will work with you and answer your questions while some make silly remarks because they knew the answer but didn't want to help. If weren't for my piers helping me over the years I probably would not be where I am now. For this I gladly help everyone that asks for help. I have even been able return the flavors to my piers when they come to me something that I knew about and they didn't.

I hope you didn't mind me asking if you were an authorized service center.

I don't mind at all, I started this profession formally 4 yrs ago. I have been a mechanic in one form or another from the age of 7. I did jet engines for 20 in the US Navy, then played around with cars, bikes, motorcycles and many other items that have pistons in them. I love it, but I know when to ask questions, maybe one day I can answer questions here like some of you do. I'll report back when I get resolution on this motor.

Well, here it is Saturday...Tuesday came and went and there was no resolution and I did not have authorization to tear into the engine. Friday I was told to return the engine to the box store where it came from for return to the manufacturer as there is not a direct replacement engine available. So, I will never know what really went wrong :( I was looking forward to opening it up but such is not to be. Thanks for all the posts. Shop opens at 0800 Monday.

I hate not knowing too. I had customer with one those bucket Kohler engine that was noisy on shut down. I want to go inside and see what was going but customer didn't want me open the engine up. He said he would run it until it die and just replace it then. I have got to go inside one these yet but looking forward to doing so I can have a good working knowledge of the design.
