crankcase of gas even with shutoff

Postby 38racing » Sun Aug 10, 2014 11:02 pm

Briggs 28 L-head. I cut grass fine for 1 1/2 hours. No issues. Shut the fuel off and parked in garage. Today I went to cut again and did my oil check and level was way up the dip stick. Noticed some wet around dipstick base o-ring and then oily spot on floor. Pulled the carb float and found brownish fluid and same when draining some from the tank. So evidence is there for needle not seating. Since valve was shut over night I assume I was flooding while cutting but had no smoke or performance issue. I guess there is remote possibility of shutoff letting some pass but I see no steady drip from hose when it is off. Bit puzzled as my gas is non ethanol and stabilized. I just might have used some from the wrong can, one in which I drain gas into from other mowers that I have reason to drain. When I drained the oil/gas I only got 1.5 litres and full is 1.4 (which it was prior to the cut session). So maybe .1 litres plus floor amount but I have yet to remove plug and see if any in cylinder. After the flush I filled with fresh gas through coffee filter and measured tank and left drain plug out. If no leak sign tomorrow then fresh oil and crossed fingers. I just re-ringed this older engine and it's been running good with no oil consumption.

.1 liters is surely not enough to bring it up to the base O ring level on an engine this big. But that being said if you really did pour in bad quality gas, did it possibly have some dirt that kept the needle from closing after you stopped it, followed by the fuel in the line after the valve leaking into the crankcase?

and puddle on floor was not a big amount. anyway overnight test saw tank level drop 3 cm and a container with gas in it below oil drain so I guess I will have to pull the carb . Might change the tank since it is a metal jury rigged one. I now have an oem plastic style for it. And the hoses too. Might just do that before pulling carb and try flushing through it with bowl off.

In my opinion the fuel shut off valve is bad and the dip stick tube o-ring needs replacing. Also the carburetor needs re-working especially the needle/seat area plus maybe a new float, depends if it has fuel in it.

shutoff valve was actually open during the overnight test but I will test it anyway.

Test what? A 3 buck plastic valve ? Replace it! And as AVB mentioned, pull the carb and do the needle/seat thang. Also, no mention of an inline fuel filter, ya might wanna install one.

has an inline filter. residue in the bowl wasn't really 'particulate' in nature. Brownish liquid , although the brown could be real small 'particles' but I doubt the standard filter would stop it. I have had many cases that did not need a needle/seat once the crap is eliminated.
