honda engine swap

Postby 38racing » Thu Nov 20, 2014 10:59 pm

Our church was given a pushmower with a honda gcv160 on it but air cleaner and part of shroud is burned up. I have found a GXV160 available with apparently same shaft length. Should that be an easy swap?

You need to visit http://www.honda-engines-eu.com/web/eec-public-site/engine-line-up and download the engine specs.

You need the type number from both engines to find out if even crankshaft PTO are the same but looks like the engines not interchangeable if your wanting to keep the same blade setup. That is what I gather from looking at the specs but I could be wrong.

X2 The GXV likely came off a mower with roto stop blade brake clutch system, if so it will have a cast iron flywheel and oddball metric crankshaft.

If not burned badly I'd repair the orig engine...

As far as swaps anything is possible... Three years ago I swapped this Honda on to a 1983 Snapper, required redrilling deck, a larger ID crank drive pulley plus a few other odds and ends... Compared to the old 3.5Hp Briggs is no doubt the best mower I've ever owned...

Turns out seller of the engine was a Honda tech and he knew the GX was from an older commercial unit and would be different. I am going to remove damaged stuff. Some parts look reasonable in price although $22 USD for a plastic float?

Depending on if it is a Thermowax version or not you might be able to get a whole carburetor for that price. Some of the carburetors are better priced as whole units than the individual parts.

Check this site that has a Honda carburetor number to part number cross reference.

My Honda was pirated from a 2004 Craftsman that deck was a lump of rust... A buddy that gave it to me said it had belonged to a neighbor and wherever they finished cutting, was where it set till they cut again...
