Pulse type fuel pump added onto Briggs engine?

Postby Arkie » Mon Dec 01, 2014 9:50 pm

Anyone ever install or experiment with installing a pulse type fuel pump on a 10 hp l-head briggs that has gravity feed fuel system in addition to a ON/OFF fuel petcock?
Reason I ask this is sometimes a user forgets to manually turn off the fuel petcock to prevent filling the crankcase with gasoline if carb float need is slightly leaking on a gravity type fuel system..
A pulse type fuel pump has additional check valves to prevent gasoline gravity flow crankcase flooding.

I'm thinking approximatley $15 for materials (pump and hose) to do such and tap into the crankcase breather tube for the pulse, maybe? :?:

Bad idea. It is not designed for a pump, gas will pour through through as soon as it starts.

Agree, besides the check valves only prevent fuel from flowing BACK to the tank - they won't stop gravity feed leaks.

Fix the Carburetor is the only true solution.

It best to find and fix carburetor leakage.

These gravity seems to a common problem that manufactures like Honda adds a manual shut-off on most of their equipment.

As Bgs and Roy note your idea won't properly. Fuel pump will cause the gravity fed carburetor to leak while the pump is in operation and the pump check valves only prevents the fuel from flowing backwards.

Now here is an option that you might consider if you wish to pursue the fuel shut off route. It is an automatic shut off valve that can be powered while the engine is in operation provide your engine has an alternator to power it DC wise. The one shown is the metal version but there is a plastic version too if you wish go the cheaper route, You will need to provide the adapters, clamps and electrical connectors.

Interesting device, KE4AVB. I sure you would agree, as you're just throwing ideas out there, it's easier and cheaper to repair the needle and seat in the carb, as others stated.
Also, it's possible that the float is stuck/leaking, which is an even simpler fix (knock on wood!) than a needle and seat.

Yes I do agree it is better to fix the carburetor problem. The electric shut off valve was just an idea if Arkie wanted to go that route which I think is better than the fuel pump idea he has.

It would be connected the same way as the anti backfire solenoids are done on the carburetors as to automate the operation of the valve.

quote from ebay listing.
This is one of our best suited valves for air applications. In addition, this valve works well with water and other very low viscosity fluids (e.g. diesel fuel, kerosine, alcohol etc.). We do not recommend this valve for gravity-fed systems due to its relatively small orifice size

Does not say gasoline either although plunger tip is viton.

Thanks 38 for the additional info I should have read down further down but they do offer other valves that should be compatible. This something in the mid of the night.

Got lots personal things going today this afternoon but I will do some more research into these tonight as I got a couple generator applications here that could use these as safety backups.

I got a reply back from the vendor that it has a 3 mm orifice and that it should work fine for most small engine applications under gravity fed conditions.
